Youth Film Day returning to Hofstra University

The Gold Coast International Film Festival is returning to Hofstra University to host its second annual Youth Film Day on Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event, which is free for students in grades 7 through 12, features a day of filmmaking workshops, panels and activities for young adults who are interested in the film industry. Aspiring filmmakers can learn from Hofstra film faculty, industry professionals and Gold Coast staff and take advantage of valuable networking opportunities. Some of the topics that will be covered include CGI, special effects makeup, drones and stunt choreography.

Caroline Sorokoff, the festival’s director, says it is a great way for students to explore new academic interests with scholars and college students as mentors.

“Our goals are to give students a clearer picture of the industry and, for those who decide to pursue careers in film or television, some practical skills and experience,” Sorokoff said in a statement.

Mark Lukasiewicz, dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra, thinks the film and television industry today is more innovative than it’s ever been, partially because more people have access to filmmaking equipment, such as smartphones.

“Young people are creating media at ever-younger ages,” Lukasiewicz said. “Exposing them to professional-level skills and techniques is a great experience for students and faculty alike.”

Short films submitted by students will also be screened during the festival and considered for awards.
