Lucky ducks: Suffolk Marine Bureau officers rescue nine ducklings in Gilgo Beach
Nine ducklings that had become trapped in a storm drain in Gilgo Beach were rescued by Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers Monday night.
Officers John Rodriguez and Robert Mroczkowski were on beach patrol at Gilgo Beach around 8 p.m. Monday evening when passers-by flagged them down and told them there were ducklings in a storm drain on Broadway.
The officers pried open the storm drain grate using a crowbar and dropped down into the drain rescuing all nine baby ducklings. The mother duckling was waiting nearby.
The officers reunited the babies with their mother and they swam into the Great South Bay.
