Nonprofit partners with Nassau County to help unhoused and disadvantaged veterans

Volunteers and staff from General Needs, a Long Island-based nonprofit dedicated to helping homeless veterans, recently joined with Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and county officials to distribute 225 new pairs of sneakers, 225 three-packs of new socks and 225 military branch-branded caps to local veterans in need during a drive-through event in Eisenhower Park.

“They served with honor and distinction, but now many veterans find themselves in dire financial straits or even homeless,” said Lonnie Sherman, co-founder of General Needs, which began as a meal delivery service at the Northport VA Medical Center in 2008.

Also attending the event and pitching in were Nassau County Legislators Samantha Goetz, Seth Koslow, Patrick Mullaney and Rose Marie Walker, as well as Ralph Esposito, director of the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency.
