$2.05M state grant funds survivor support initiatives at The Retreat
While October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), this month also marks a significant milestone for East End nonprofit The Retreat—the start of a three year, $2.05 million per year grant from the New York State Office of Victim Services (OVS).
The funding is part of the state’s expanded $379.5 million, three-year initiative to assist victims of crime and their families. The grant will help cover essential services, such as housing, counseling, family court advocacy, and other urgent needs for survivors of domestic violence.
“Across Long Island, the demand for our services has increased significantly, and continued investment from OVS ensures that we can expand our reach, strengthen our programs, and meet survivors where they are with the counseling, legal advocacy, shelter, and prevention services they deserve,” said Cate Carbonaro, executive director of The Retreat. “This support is essential to respond to the rising need in our communities and to ensure safety, healing, and justice for every survivor who turns to us.”

As part of its continued commitment to community well-being, the Town of East Hampton has also recently allocated $30,000 to The Retreat for the third consecutive year to support its work with survivors.
Each October, The Retreat recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a series of initiatives aimed at raising awareness, supporting survivors, and mobilizing the community. This year’s campaign includes educational outreach, survivor resources, and tools for community engagement, including Purple Thursday on October 16, when individuals are encouraged to wear purple to show solidarity with survivors and promote healthy relationships. The date will also serve as The Retreat’s Giving Day—a vital fundraising effort to support the organization’s free and confidential services. Donations can be made at AllAgainstAbuse.org/GivingDay.
