Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Library showcases local artists
The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library hosted an artists reception on Jan. 31 to launch its latest exhibition featuring residents from across the library district.
Held at the main branch in Shirley, the event spotlighted the work of Peter Russo, Jeannie Baker, Charles Gerbino Jr., and Whitney Bell. Work by photographer David Bradshaw was added to the installation the following day.
“This reception builds directly on the spirit of Stories That Started Here, where we celebrated local voices through the written word,” said Lonna Castro, the library’s director. “Events like these affirm the Library’s role as a place where that talent can be shared, supported, and celebrated.”
The exhibition covers a variety of media, including Russo’s coastal paintings, Bell’s landscape photography, and sculptures by Gerbino, who is known as the “Artful Surfer.” Baker displayed three-dimensional statuary, while Bradshaw’s contributions offer a “cinematic look” at urban scenes and architectural details.
“Programs like this show how the Library can invest in cultural experiences that enrich residents’ lives while honoring the confidence the community places in us,” said Joe Maiorana, president of the library’s board of trustees.
The work of Baker and Bradshaw will remain on display through February at the Main Library at 407 William Floyd Parkway in Shirley and the Moriches branch at 201 Montauk Highway.
