Whaling Museum to celebrate Black History Month

The Whaling Museum & Education Center in Cold Spring Harbor is presenting new programs to highlight Black History Month.

The museum will feature special exhibits that explore the role of African-American mariners in whaling history.

The celebration kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. with “From Sea to Shining Sea: Whalers of the African Diaspora.” The program, which includes light refreshments, features guest curator Dr. Georgette Grier-Key.

The Whaleboat Chat continues at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 21 as attendees will learn of the tale of the dangerous Nantucket Sleighride and the brave whalers.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and Friday, Feb. 24, the museum will present a Build-A-Boat Workshop, where visitors can learn about African-American whalers who designed, built and worked on whaling ships in the 19th century. Guests can also design and create unique wooden vessel models out of a variety of materials.
