Solar canopy to top amphitheater parking lot

Much of the parking lot at the Long Island Community Hospital Amphitheater in Farmingville will soon be covered by a solar panel canopy.

Owned by the Town of Brookhaven and operated by JVC Broadcasting, the amphitheater off South Bicycle Path has a sprawling parking lot, 6.5 acres of which is targeted for the new solar installation. The canopy will have more than 6,100 solar panels with a generation capacity of 2.38 megawatts of clean, renewable solar energy.

The project from 5 Star Solar, headquartered in Murray, Utah and Manorville-based SYP Industries is expected to reduce the town’s carbon footprint while lowering its electric power costs. Manhattan-based C2 Energy Capital will finance, own and operate the solar installation. C2 Energy expects most of the construction to take place early next year.
