Canine Companions, celebrating 50th year, graduates 10 new service dog teams

Ten new service dog teams graduated from their team training programs earlier this month, during a ceremony at The Genesis Center in Medford.

During the two-week program, 10 people with disabilities were matched with Canine Companions service dogs, living and training together. The dogs know over 40 advanced commands, such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, and picking up dropped items.

During the graduation, the volunteer puppy raisers ceremoniously passed the dogs’ leashes to their new recipients.

The event also honored Diane Fergenson of Hicksville, a 31+ year volunteer and puppy raiser, one of the organization’s most dedicated volunteers. She was presented with the National Board of Directors Regional Volunteer Award for her exceptional commitment to the mission of Canine Companions.
