Armor Museum program supplies plenty of blasts from the past

If you’ve ever wondered about traveling back through time to witness history firsthand, you should consider a visit to the Museum of American Armor next weekend.

That’s when the museum, along with the Long Island Living History Association, will host a tribute to our nation’s storied military heritage with the presentation of the World War II Weekend and Military Timeline.

Held in cooperation with the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Museums, the two-day event takes place on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

Among the activities and exhibits for visitors will be a parade featuring operational World War II tanks, armored cars, half-tracks, and replica enemy vehicles.

Escorted by ‘Doughboys’ of that era, the Armor Museum will also unveil a replica World War I tank that revolutionized tactics on the battlefield over 100 years ago. The replica Renault F17 tank, built from the frame up, was used by French and American troops and added this spring to the Armor Museum’s collection of about 50 operational historic military vehicles.

In addition, living historians will present the uniforms and tactics of military forces throughout history while the Armor Museum’s “FDR” interpreter and Churchill living historian will greet visitors to remind them of an era when our nation defeated the enemies of freedom.

Those who’ve attended similar events at the Armor Museum’s 25,000 square-foot facility and surrounding grounds highly recommended the experience for history buffs and thrill-seekers young and old. The sights and sounds at this special World War II Weekend and Military Timeline will educate and entertain, but also honor the country’s resilient defenders, both the brave veterans who served in America’s armed forces and the formidable military hardware they used to help preserve democracy.

The weekend program is sponsored by PSEG Long Island, Four Leaf Credit Union, Shoprite at Country Pointe Plainview, Theodore Books, and B2K Development.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. with the last admission at 3 p.m. Admission for adults is $15; admission for seniors 60 and older and children 5 to 12 is $12, and children 4 and under are free.

The Museum of American Armor is located inside Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration at 1303 Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage.
