North Fork Environmental Council hosts Beyond Bees

The North Fork Environmental Council (NFEC) is hosting a unique program to explore pollination powerhouses next week.

Called “Beyond Bees: The World of Alternative Pollinators,” the free presentation takes place at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 22 at Peconic Landing Community Center Auditorium at 1500 Brecknock Road in Greenport.

The presentation looks past the honeybee to the world of alternative pollinators, like flies, beetles, moths and butterflies that play a critical role in sustaining the North Fork’s ecosystems and agriculture.

“Most people think of bees as the only pollinators, but that’s just part of the story,” said Lilla Chicco, NFEC’s summer intern and the event’s lead presenter. “Once you learn about these other incredible species—and how much they do for our farms, gardens, and wild spaces—you’ll never look at a fly or beetle the same way again.”

Guests at the event will also enjoy tastings of locally made jams from Blossom Meadow Farm, which depend on the pollinators for their rich flavors.

“Our food systems and local economy depend on pollinators—bees and beyond,” said NFEC President Mark Haubner. “If we don’t start valuing and protecting all of them now, we risk losing more than just biodiversity. Events like this help our community understand that everyone has a role to play.”

Anne Murray, NFEC’s Southold Land Use coordinator, praised Chicco’s work which reflects NFEC’s mission to inspire the community to act on behalf of the environment.

“Lilla brings contagious enthusiasm and fresh insights to this topic,” she said. “Her presentation combines science, storytelling, and practical tips that anyone can use to support pollinators in their own backyard.”
