Nonprofit hosts OPWDD chief for visit highlighting self-advocacy, employment and community

Bohemia nonprofit People’s Arc of Suffolk recently welcomed Willow Baer, commissioner of the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), for a visit that showcased the organization’s mission in action.

Commissioner Baer and her staff joined participants from the Day Habilitation program on the mat for an interactive karate class, followed by a tour of the People’s Arc of Suffolk building led by self-advocates Caleb and Veronica, who shared their personal experiences within the organization.

“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to see the impact of these programs personally,” said Commissioner Baer, who was accompanied by Michelle Torres and Wilfrid Chou from OPWDD. “People’s Arc of Suffolk amplifies the work we want to see done throughout the state as we continue to focus together on advocacy, access to support and quality outcomes.”

The visit concluded at People’s Arc of Suffolk Sayville location with a reception for the guests. “This visit was about more than showcasing our programs,” said Mary Fu, chief advancement officer for People’s Arc of Suffolk. “It was about elevating the voices of self-advocates, celebrating authentic engagement, and demonstrating what’s possible when state leadership and community organizations connect in meaningful ways.”
