AARP celebrates Social Security’s 90th anniversary with pizza pop-ups

AARP New York hosted a series of “Pizza Pop-Up” events this week to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Social Security and discuss its future.

On Tuesday, July 29, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-4) attended an event at Borrelli’s in East Meadow, while on Thursday, July 31, Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-3) joined constituents at Forest Avenue Pizza in Glen Cove. Both events allowed residents to meet directly with their elected officials and share their experiences with Social Security.

The events are part of AARP New York’s “Social Security: Served Up NY Style” campaign, which includes over 150 community gatherings across the state in the lead-up to Social Security’s 90th anniversary on August 14. The initiative aims to provide a space for older adults and elected leaders to discuss the program’s impact.

Beth Finkel, state director of AARP New York, emphasized that Social Security is a vital support system for many, noting that over 270,000 residents in Nassau County receive Social Security, contributing nearly $6.9 billion to the local economy each year. These payments support retirees, people with disabilities, children, and surviving family members.

Social Security has provided crucial financial support for generations of Americans, offering them a steady source of income in retirement or in the event of disability. According to AARP, 14% of people 65 and older rely on Social Security for most of their income, and 40% depend on it for more than half.

At the event, AARP volunteer Meryl Manthey shared how Social Security has been a cornerstone of her financial planning for retirement, and she called for continued fiscal responsibility from those managing the program.

Both Congress members reaffirmed their commitment to protecting and strengthening Social Security, with Gillen saying she would always oppose efforts to reduce benefits or privatize the program, and Suozzi reiterating that he would fight to ensure Social Security remains a secure foundation for future generations.

The Pizza Pop-Up series will continue throughout the summer as part of AARP New York’s 90-day campaign, which aims to celebrate Social Security’s legacy and call on leaders to ensure its continued strength.
