TNC Chocolate Lab celebrates first year of sweet success

A Port Washington chocolate shop that doubles as a job-training hub for adults with autism spectrum disorder is celebrating a milestone.

The TNC Chocolate Lab, a social enterprise of The Nicholas Center, is marking its one-year anniversary this month after a year of growing sales, statewide recognition and new employment opportunities for its participants.

To celebrate, the Chocolate Lab will host an open house on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 195 Manorhaven Blvd. in Port Washington, with special remarks at noon.

In just 12 months, the shop has become a model for inclusive vocational training. Each week, more than 30 individuals receive hands-on experience in culinary production and retail operations at the Chocolate Lab, learning skills that translate directly to the workplace. The program has already led to two direct hires from its pool of trainees.

The Chocolate Lab is a core part of The Nicholas Center’s mission to create innovative programs and services that allow individuals with autism to learn, live and work in the community.

Leaders at the nonprofit say the shop’s performance proves that mission-driven businesses can also compete in the marketplace.

That impact is being noticed beyond Port Washington. This year, Long Island Business News named TNC Chocolate Lab a “Best Startup 2025,” recognizing its combination of business innovation and social impact.

The Lab’s reach has also gone statewide. TNC chocolate products have earned placement in three Taste NY locations across New York and were featured at the Taste NY Marketplace at the New York State Fair in August 2025, giving the concept exposure to thousands of fairgoers.

The shop has become a popular choice for corporate gifts and holiday orders, with businesses turning to its handmade chocolates as a way to give a high-quality product that also supports inclusive employment.

“The growth we’ve seen in this first year is unprecedented,” said Nicole Ferrara, executive director and co-founder of The Nicholas Center. “The Chocolate Lab is more than a successful business; it’s proof that ability drives economic value and breaks the barriers of the 85 percent unemployment and under-engagement rates faced by Autistic young adults. Every milestone is a step toward securing independence and dignity for our participants.”
