More progress at Coltrane Home restoration in Dix Hills

The restoration of the Coltrane Home in Dix Hills is progressing.

There is a renewed front façade, the future welcome center taking shape along the side of the property, and a backyard transformed from a tangle of woods and weeds into a gathering space with a new patio underway.

A major part of this work has been the painstaking restoration of the home’s exterior brickwork. The original bricks were carefully removed, cleaned, and replaced to preserve the historic character of the house, while new windows have been installed to match the original appearance and ensure the building’s long-term preservation.

The improvements are bringing the landmark closer to opening as a vibrant cultural center that honors the legacy of John and Alice Coltrane while serving the community for generations to come.

The home is where the Coltranes lived in the 1960s and where they created some of their most treasured music. After a worldwide grass-roots effort, the Coltrane home was saved from imminent demolition when it was designated as a local Historic Landmark by the Huntington Town Board in 2004. The home was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The National Trust for Historic Preservation designated the home as a National Treasure in 2018 and later awarded the home a grant from the Trust’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.
