Bohemia school for students with disabilities hosts “Out of This World” prom
People’s Arc of Suffolk hosted a prom at its Bohemia Educare Center on Friday, June 5 marking the end of the school year for more than 30 students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Students in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades dressed up in formal and semi-formal attire for the “Out of This World” themed event to sing and dance, both on foot and in their decorated wheelchairs, posing for pictures with their families and teachers. A local DJ donated his time to provide the music, and the room was decorated with stars, planets and green balloon aliens by teachers and volunteers.
“Prom is an important event for every student, and ours are no different from any other,” said Dana Schillinger, VP for children’s services at the People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center. “This is the end of the year, they have worked hard achieving their own personal goals, growing and learning and getting ready for the world. Now it’s time to dance the day away.”
The People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center offers education and therapeutic services to students aged 5-21 with developmental disabilities.
