Scanner for Maryhaven advances employment opportunities
The New York State Industries for the Disabled presented its member agency Maryhaven Integrated Business Center in Yaphank with a check for $11,000, which matches the organization’s own investment. The combined $22,000 has been used to purchase a new document scanner to help advance employment opportunities for those with disabilities.
The Maryhaven Integrated Business Center is a social enterprise dedicated to creating meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with unique abilities. The IBC provides high-quality business services—including document imaging, scanning, and fulfillment—to public and private sector partners.
The new scanner introduces tasks such as document preparation, scanning, indexing, and quality control. These roles can be adapted to different ability levels, allowing employees to learn technical skills and gain confidence in handling advanced equipment. Operating modern technology fosters a sense of independence and accomplishment, demonstrating that employees with disabilities can perform essential functions in a professional setting, reinforcing inclusion and reducing stigma.
Large scanners often have user-friendly interfaces, adjustable settings, and automation features that reduce physical strain. This makes the work environment more accessible for individuals with mobility or dexterity challenges. By expanding the scope of services, Maryhaven can attract more business, leading to stable jobs for employees with disabilities.
“This new scanner will allow us to better support employees with disabilities in their jobs,” said Amanda Dondero, director of Integrated Business Center Services at Maryhaven. “We aim to empower everyone with disabilities and this new piece of technology will help our employees to perform at their best and help us grow. We appreciate NYSID for providing this matching grant.”
NYSID is a nonprofit membership organization with a mission of advancing employment and other opportunities for individuals with disabilities and qualified veterans.
“We are proud to assist Maryhaven in helping employees with disabilities thrive in their jobs,” said Maureen O’Brien, president and CEO of NYSID. “Meaningful employment not only empowers individuals with disabilities, but also plays a vital role in strengthening our local and state economy.”
Through its statewide network of over 140 non-profit rehabilitative agencies and private sector business partners, NYSID purchasing powers employment for thousands of individuals annually. In fiscal year 2025, these individuals earned $87.2 million.
