Glen Cove firm crafts conference table for Fort Knox
A 30-foot mahogany conference table made by craftsmen on Long Island’s Gold Coast was delivered to another golden venue.
Glen Cove-based Sound Designs recently completed the table for the general’s conference room at the U.S. Army Cadet Command building at Fort Knox in Kentucky.
The table, which measures 30 feet long by 5 feet wide, was crafted from Khaya mahogany veneer with a solid Khaya mahogany base. The material selection was driven by founder Joe Ferrara, who researched the right species of mahogany for the project, hand-selected the veneer, chose the stain, and personally sourced solid wood boards from two different suppliers to ensure the quality and character of every piece of lumber that went into the build, according to a company statement.

“This was a departure from our usual work with local wood, but the opportunity to build something for the United States Army — a piece that will be in that room for decades — was one we took very seriously,” said Ferrara. “Every decision, from the species of wood to the finish, was made with that in mind.”
Master cabinetmaker and Roslyn resident Joel Landstein, served as the driving force behind the table’s design and construction. With over 25 years of experience building high-end cabinetry on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the North Shore of Long Island, Landstein brought exacting precision to every joint, panel, and surface. His engineering background — he studied mechanical engineering at NYIT — and his obsessive attention to detail ensured that a table this large would be built to last generations.
Carlos Rivas, a Glen Cove resident and Sound Designs creative and production specialist, supported the Fort Knox table from concept through completion, bringing his eye for design to a build that demanded both artistry and precision.
When the table was finished, Ferrara and Rivas loaded it up and made the drive themselves from Glen Cove to Fort Knox — a fitting end to a project built entirely by hand, by a team that takes pride in seeing their work all the way through.
