Orchestra Long Island receives funding via Long Island Grants for the Arts

Long Island Grants for the Arts, a program administered by the Huntington Arts Council, recently awarded Orchestra Long Island with a $7,500 general operating support grant provided via money made available by Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office and the New York State Legislature.

“The funds will help to provide support for our education programs and assist with future performance opportunities as well,” according to David Stewart Wiley, the orchestra’s music director and conductor.

Established in 2017, Orchestra Long Island is a Huntington-based nonprofit that carries forward the musical legacy of the Long Island Philharmonic. It is led by Wiley, renowned as a leader in music performance and education on Long Island for nearly two decades. Orchestra members are full-time, paid musicians who perform an eclectic musical repertoire including beloved old and contemporary classical compositions, jazz, pop-rock, Broadway show tunes, and more.

In addition to live performances at concert halls and parks, the orchestra takes great pride in its Arts in Education programs throughout Long Island, designed to support the school curriculum from pre-K through high school.

As part of its Performance Partners residency program, music students at Uniondale High School will perform side by side with members of Orchestra Long Island in a culminating concert in May. Maestro Wiley will also conduct a master class and musical workshop for students at Brentwood High School this spring.

“We are grateful to Governor Hochul’s office, the New York State Legislature, and the Huntington Arts Council for their financial support,” said Wiley.  “We appreciate their shared belief that Long Islanders deserve a professional orchestra that invigorates the cultural landscape of Long Island, provides great music for all and enriches learning opportunities for youth.”
