‘Great Whale Takeover’ brings a whale of a time to Cold Spring Harbor

The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and Education Center has announced the ‘Great Whale Takeover.’

The event takes place on Sunday, September 28 from 10:30 a.m. (10 a.m. for members) to 4 p.m., featuring a visit from the only life-size inflatable whale in New York State—a 45-foot long model sperm whale that functions as its own exhibit.

In addition to tours inside and outside of the whale, attendees can etch and take home their own scrimshaw art design and enjoy a variety of other activities including face painting, under-the-sea trivia games, crafts provided by AMSEAS (Atlantic Marine Conservation Society), and a hands-on harpooning demonstration.

Admission is $20 for members, and $25 for general admission with a maximum of $100 for a family of six. Advance tickets are strongly recommended — whale tours have limited capacity. Door tickets will be available, but inner access to the whale may not be available without advance booking. Attendees who wish to enter the whale must come wearing socks, as shoes will need to be removed.
