Met Council distributing 2 million pounds of food for Jewish holidays

Met Council, America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to fighting poverty, is distributing more than 2 million pounds of kosher food to individuals and families facing food insecurity ahead of the Jewish High Holidays.

This year’s campaign will serve 162 partner agencies, including more than 15 participating for the first time, as well as 13 Market by Met Council sites. Met Council is also expanding its reach in New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island and Florida.

Families will receive kosher pantry staples, fresh produce and traditional holiday foods, including honey, grape juice, apples, chicken, fish, eggs, rice, pasta, beans and canned goods. In total, Met Council will distribute 55,026 bottles of grape juice, 48,384 bottles of honey and 659,432 pounds of fresh produce.

“The High Holidays are about family, tradition and hope, but for too many families they also bring the added stress of figuring out how to afford a holiday meal,” said David G. Greenfield, CEO of Met Council. “That is simply unacceptable. Met Council is distributing more than 2 million pounds of kosher food because every family deserves to celebrate with dignity. Through this campaign, we are sending a clear message to families in need: You are not alone.”

Distributions began on August 19 and will continue through September 24, with more than 500 volunteers, including elected officials and community leaders, joining Met Council staff throughout the campaign.
