Brookhaven announces e-waste, paper shredding and drug take back events

The Town of Brookhaven has announced several upcoming e-waste, paper shredding and drug take back events for 2019.

From April through October, Brookhaven residents can show up at scheduled events and safely dispose of old prescription drugs and electronics, as well as any sensitive paper documents that need to be shredded. Participants will be able to witness the shredding process in person and watch their papers turn into a mess of confetti.

Teachers Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the events for the fifth consecutive year. The Hauppauge-based credit union presented the town with a $2,000 check during the announcement.

Experts estimate that consumers throw away 400 million electronics each year in the U.S. Properly recycling electronics helps protect the environment and keeps chemicals like mercury and lead from contaminating the soil, according to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
