Smithtown shreds more than 6 tons of paper over the weekend

More than 300 Smithtown residents showed up for the town’s paper shredding event on Saturday.

Approximately 12,500 pounds of paper — more than six tons — was collected and securely destroyed in the ‘Shreddersaurus’ provided by Hauppauge-based Data Shredding Service on Sept. 21.

The turnout was significantly higher than in April, when 203 households took advantage of the free service. Last year the town destroyed 10.1 tons of paper in the Summer and Fall combined.

Recycling shredded paper is good for the environment because the process doesn’t require new wood.

The town’s Department of Environment and Waterways holds the event twice a year.
