Women’s Safety Seminar hosted at martial arts studio

A free Women’s Safety Seminar was held at Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts studio in Huntington last week.

The event, held in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, was hosted by Tiger Schulmann’s, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness and Suffolk County Legis. Rebecca Sanin.

The collaborative effort between local government, nonprofit leadership, and the business community, aimed to provide women with free access to practical resources, personal safety education, and supportive community connection. Designed to support both physical and mental well-being, the evening brought together women and girls of all ages in a welcoming and empowering environment.

Participants learned practical self-defense techniques led by Sensei Matthew Castillo while also connecting with local organizations, resources, and one another. The event welcomed attendees ranging from adolescents to women in their seventies, underscoring the importance of ensuring women of all ages feel supported, prepared, and valued within their community.

“Tiger Schulmann’s has always been more than a martial arts studio. We are a trusted resource for safety and empowerment in this community,” said Sensei Matthew Castillo, owner and head instructor of Tiger Schulmann’s Huntington. “This seminar is our way of ensuring that every woman in our community has the tools, confidence and skills to protect herself and feel secure in her daily life.”

Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, said physical safety and psychological safety are inseparable partners.

“I was honored to partner with Legislator Sanin and Tiger Schulmann’s to advance the total safety, health, and empowerment of women during this Mental Health Awareness Month.”

Sanin said the event was about more than self defense.

“In a time when affordability is a mounting challenge for families, bringing together our government, nonprofit and private sector partners to create upbeat events for our neighbors creates a win-win for the community,” she said.
